In 2002 Valdrighi stopped developing b2, but in January 2003 Mullenweg, a university freshman who was using b2, wrote on his blog that he would be willing to “fork” the blogging tool (that is, continue improving it without Valdrighi’s involvement). WordPress was the successor to the blogging tool b2/cafelog, which was developed in 2001 by French programmer Michel Valdrighi. It is also an open-source product, so users can modify it for their own purposes. WordPress is most often used to create blogs, but the program is sufficiently flexible that it can be used to create and design any sort of website.
